Competition Method
The following method will be used for team competition:
- Registered teams will be randomly assigned a
number prior to the start of competition. This will be done at the
coach’s meeting Wednesday evening.
- During the first two days of competition teams
will quiz each other team to determine which division they will be
placed in for the final day of competition.
- To put the maximum number of teams together in a
head-to-head quiz the first two days of quizzing will be condensed as
follows:
- Teams will compete in one 12 minute period.
- The score of the appropriate written quiz will
be stated at the beginning of the quiz. If a team has more than
four quizzers, the coach must designate which writtens will count
for the team competition at the beginning of the quiz, before
the scores are announced. This will be the starting scores for the
teams involved.
- Following the announcement of the written quiz
scores the teams will quiz for 6 minutes.
- There will then be an intermission during
which teams may make a free substitution.
- Teams can make substitutions during this
time. Players who quizzed out in the first half may not return for
the second half.
- The remaining 6 minutes of the quiz will be
played. It is not necessary for teams to switch sides at the half.
- Each team is allowed 1 time out during the 12
minute quiz. Each time out is one minute.
- The quiz is complete at the end of the 12
minute period.
- A tie score will result in a three-minute
overtime, during which all quizzers will be eligible.
- Coaches please check your score against the
official score and sign the score sheet after each round. Once the
scores are submitted to the stats room there will be NO changes. It
is the coach’s responsibility to make sure team and individual
scores are correct.
- At the conclusion of the second day of quizzing
teams will be ranked based upon the ranking guidelines outlined below
and divided into divisions for Saturday.
- On the third day of quizzing teams will compete in
head-to-head quizzes within their division. New random numbers will be
assigned at breakfast that day for each division. These quizzes will be
full, regulation quizzes with two 12 minute halves (with a written). At
the end of the day teams will be ranked based upon the ranking
guidelines. These final rankings will determine the national
champion of the tournament, as well as the scholarship distribution for
both Division A and Division B.
Team Ranking Guidelines
- Teams will be ranked based upon win/loss record
(within their division when appropriate).
- If two teams have the same win/loss record, the
winner of their head to head round(s) would be the higher-ranking team.
This only applies if they quizzed each other within that session of
competition.
- If the winner still cannot be determined the team
with the higher total points will be the higher ranking team.
- If the winner still cannot be determined the two
teams will compete in a five-minute quiz off (no written); the winning
team receives the higher rank. Quiz-offs of this sort will only take
place if a team scholarship is at stake.
Team Scholarship Distribution
The Wesleyan Colleges and Universities provide very gracious scholarships
for the top teams at the national quiz. The schedule outlines will be
determined based on the number of teams participating and should be
available in late June. Amounts will be up to $1000. per individual for the
top team of the competition. Each team can win up to, but cannot exceed,
six scholarships based upon the number of team members on that team.
Individual Competition Method
– Toss Up The following method will
be used for individual competition:
- All Wesleyan Bible Bowl quizzers are eligible to
compete in the individual competition, but they must first register to
do so.
- All registered quizzers will be randomly separated
into quiz groups. These quiz groups will rotate throughout Thursday and
Friday, quizzing two times with their group for each rotation.
- Each quiz group will randomly quiz against other
quiz groups. Group scores will not be tallied – only individual scores.
- The following method will be used for individual
quizzing:
- Individual quizzes will consist of 20 question
sets and will not contain written quizzes or bonuses.
- A question set consists of three questions: A,
B, and C. If A is incorrect, individuals will attempt B, except the
one will got A wrong. If B is incorrect, remaining quizzers may try
C. If C is incorrect, all individuals will move on to the next
set.
- Each toss-up question is worth 10 points.
Correct answers add 10 points to an individual score; incorrect
answers deduct 10 points from an individual score.
- Five correctly answered questions constitute a
quiz-out and the quizzer is no longer eligible to answer questions
for that round.
- There are no error-outs.
- If a question is answered in incorrectly, the
quizmaster will not repeat that question. The incorrect question
will not be eligible to be answered by other quizzers. This
includes questions that are ruled incorrect due to a successful
challenge.
- Appeals can be made by the first quizzer
recognized by the quizmaster.
- Each quizzer is allowed one coach during the
individual competition. Multiple quizzers can have the same coach.
- There will be one 2 minute time-out after 10
questions at which time coaches can confer with quizzers and at
which time current scores will be announced.
- At the end of the second day of quizzing quizzers
will be ranked using the guidelines listed below.
- Only the top 16 individual quizzers will advance
to the individual quizzing finals, where they will compete for new
rounds with randomly assigned groups, rotated each round. Quizzers will
then be ranked based on the ranking guidelines. These final rankings
will determine the top toss-up quizzers of the national tournament, with
scholarships awarded accordingly.
Ranking Guidelines
- The quizzer with the highest cumulative score is
the top quizzer. Quizzers will be ranked in descending order based upon
their scores.
- If two quizzers have the same cumulative score at
a session of quizzing the tie will be broken by total errors during
individual quizzing. The quizzer with the least number of errors would
be the higher-ranking quizzer.
- If a tie remains the two quizzers will participate
in a five-question quiz off. The winner of the five-question quiz off
will be the higher-ranking quizzer. Quiz offs of this sort will only
take place if a place in the top ten is at stake.

Individual Competition Method
– Written The following method will
be used for individual written competition:
- Individual written quiz rankings are based upon
individual performance during the first two days of quizzing only,
including all written quizzes taken during that time.
- All quizzers will take all writtens during the
“written session” at the beginning of Thursday and Friday.
- These writtens will also apply to team
competitions. If a team has more than four quizzers, all quizzers will
still take the writtens, but the coach must designate which writtens
will count for the team competition at the beginning of the quiz,
before the scores are announced.
- At the end of the second day of quizzing, quizzers
will be ranked based upon the ranking guidelines outlined below.
These rankings will determine the top written quizzers of the national
tournament, with scholarships awarded accordingly.
Ranking Guidelines
- The quizzer with the highest cumulative score is
the top quizzer. Quizzers will be ranked in descending order based only
upon written scores.
- If two or more quizzers have the same score the
tie will be broken by toss-up score. This toss-up score will be based
upon the team competition only, and will constitute total points gained
in all quizzes from the first two days of quizzing. The quizzer with
the higher score will be the higher ranked quizzer.
- If a tie still remains the quizzers will compete
in a 5 question quiz off. The winner of the quiz off would be the higher
ranked quizzer. Quiz offs of this sort will only take place if a place
in the top ten is at stake.
