National
Finals

- What is the schedule for the National Competition?
- What do the housing and the meal plans include?
- housing includes Wednesday night through Saturday
night
- meal plans cover three meals each on Thursday,
Friday, and Saturday, including the banquet Saturday evening
- What is the
registration deadline?
- Why don’t the top area
teams get free registrations, but only free room and board? Plus no one
receives free t-shirts?
- This is an
attempt to balance our budget. WBB lost money, and we are trying to be
faithful in our finances.
- We are
grateful to Oklahoma Wesleyan University for agreeing to provide free
housing and meals to our area champions in recognition of their
achievements.
- My daughter is
interested in visiting the college as a potential student - will there be
time for this?
- There is not a built-in time for visiting with
college reps. However, families are encouraged to contact the
admissions office of OWU directly to arrange a meeting. The best time
to meet would be Wednesday afternoon before registration, though there
will also be some time during the day Thursday and Friday (mainly
depending on participation in individual competitions).
- How will the
individual written competition take place?
- All quizzers will take the same writtens Thursday
and Friday mornings during a “written session.” These scores will apply
toward the team competitions later each day, as well as determine the
overall standing of each individual in the written competition.
- This new system will provide needed consistency in
our written competition: all quizzers will take the same writtens, which
will be graded by the same team of officials.
- How will the
individual toss-up competition take place?
- The following method will be used for individual
competition: (click here again to see details)
- All Wesleyan Bible Bowl quizzers are eligible
to compete in the individual competition, but they must first
register to do so.
- All registered quizzers will be randomly
separated into quiz groups.
- Each quiz group will randomly quiz against
other quiz groups.
- At the end of each day of individual quizzing
quizzers will be ranked based upon the above procedure.
- Individual quizzes will consist of 20 question
sets and will not contain written quizzes or bonuses.
- We will use an A, B, C system: if a quizzer
answers a question incorrectly, all other quizzers will have a
chance to answer a replacement question. This may happen up to two
times per question set. This is to help insure that a quizzer will
not penalize other quizzers when getting a question wrong by taking
away potential points for them. Point deductions still apply as
appropriate (see #7 below).
- Each toss-up question is worth 10 points.
Correct answers add 10 points to an individual score; incorrect
answers deduct 10 points from an individual score. Five correctly
answered questions constitute a quiz-out and the quizzer is no
longer eligible to answer questions for that round. There are no
error-outs.
- Challenges can be made by the first quizzer
recognized by the quizmaster. If a question is ruled incorrect due
to a challenge, the challenging individual does not get a chance to
answer it. A new question is read as per #6 above.
- Each quizzer is allowed one coach during the
individual competition. Multiple quizzers can have the same coach.
- There will be one 1 minute time-out after 10
questions at which time coaches can confer with quizzers.

- What if we want to
stay off-campus?
- Please consult the internet or an appropriate
travel guide for options.
- I or someone I know
is interested in serving as an official - who do we contact for
more information?
- We are in need of officials, so this would be a
great help. Please contact either Jim Terwilliger at
pastorjimt@verizon.net.
- Why is the individual toss-up competition being done separate from
the rest of the competition rather than basing it on how the individuals do
during the team competition?
- The thought is to switch from more of a
"MVP-style" top quizzer to a "pure" top quizzer award. The former really
only recognizes those who made the largest contribution to their team,
which can limit subsequent players from the same team.
For example, a really good player on a team quizzes out regularly,
making it difficult for others on the same team to get in, even though
they may be very good as well. Potentially, the top two quizzers in the
tournament could be from the same team, but they would never both be
recognized as such as they would balance each other out so much in the
competitions, as compared to another quizzer with no competition on her
own team.
A "pure" top quizzer is found when all the quizzers quiz one another
individually, and all quizzers are on an equal footing. Sure, you might
draw some tough opponents in your random group, but we randomize the
groups more than once to avoid that as much as possible. And then on the
final day we shuffle all of the top ranked quizzers from the first two
days into a competition with one another. This way the top quizzer
really is the top quizzer, as they had beat out their opponents in
head-to-head competition.
- What will we have to
do during the evenings and other free time?
- Everyone is welcome to participate in various
activities. IWU will have the pool, gym, game room, and other places
available for fun times. These amenities are being provided free of
charge by IWU. Both the pool and intramural gym are located at the
Recreation and Wellness Center on the IWU campus.
- Please note that the individual competition finals
will take place Friday evening this year.
- How will the team
competition take place?
- Thursday and Friday teams will quiz against one
another in a round-robin format, with several rounds of quizzing each
day (each quiz will be 12 minutes, with a written score from writtens
taken that morning). The exact format of this will depend on the number
of teams registered.
Teams will then be ranked and placed into divisions that will quiz
together on Saturday to determine final rankings. These will be full
quizzes (two 12-minute halves, with a written).
All rankings will be based on win/loss records, with head-to-head
results the first tie-breaker, and total points the second. Thursday and
Friday records will not contribute to the final standings on Saturday,
but only toward placement in divisions.

Schedule
of Events
- The registration form
has a place for "individual" next to each quizzer - what is this for?
- This should be marked "yes" only if the quizzer
plans to participate in the individual toss-up competition that will
take place each after team quizzing is completed. If "no" is indicated,
they will not participate. However, all quizzers are automatically
entered into the individual written competition.
- What are the actual
scholarships available?
- The exact number of team scholarships will depend
on the number of teams registered. Scholarships will also be given to
the top 10 quizzers based on their collective written scores, and the
top 10 quizzers from a head-to-head toss-up competition.
- Must all of the money
for meals and registration be included when you register?
- Yes, all of the money is due with your
registration.
- What other special
events will be going on for coaches?
- Also, we are planning a coach's roundtable for at
least one of the nights. This will include a discussion of WBB in
general, as well as potentially a time of sharing for coaches.
- We’ve never done
head-to-head individual quizzing before – could you give us some tips?
- While this type of quizzing may seem intimidating,
many quizzers have actually found it fun, yet challenging. It definitely
brings something different to the table in terms of quizzing style. Here
are a few thoughts for those who have never tried it before:
(Click here to see the few thoughts)
- Don’t take too many risks – remember you lose
ten points for each wrong answer, and just two errors can bury you
pretty early. And you still quiz out with five correct answers, no
matter how many you’ve gotten wrong (we had a guy quiz out with -10
points once!).
- The A,B,C system will help also – look for
opportunities here after a fast quizzer has removed himself due to
buzzing in too quick.
- Watch the competition – if you’re falling
behind, it might just necessitate a little more risk-taking on your
part (despite #1).
- Use the half-time to stretch, re-group, and
get a feel for where you stand.
- Go for the long haul – remember that there are
20 questions: you don’t need to quiz out on the first five, or even
in the first ten. Bide your time, but don’t wait too long either.
- Go for the long haul II – there are 12 rounds
of individual quizzing to qualify for Saturday finals. A couple of
bad quizzes won’t necessarily knock you out. Keep on keeping on!
- Above all, know your stuff and work on your
pre-jumps! (Pre-jumps are the first few unique words of each memory
verse.)
- Most importantly – Have Fun!
We
have a person on our team who does not attend our church - is that okay?
- (from the official rules):
Team members must be from the local Wesleyan youth they represent.
However, local churches are encouraged to include youth from other local
churches or denominations where no team exists. Our goal is to provide
quizzing opportunities for youth who would like to quiz without
including youth that have programs in which they can already compete.
Any non-Wesleyan youth or youth from another Wesleyan church must
register with the National Director, who will consult with the National
Quiz Council as necessary, so that everyone will be aware that an
exception is being made. This rule applies only to official District,
Area, and National competitions.
What styles of questions can I expect to hear at Nationals, and how specific
do I need to be when answering them?
- There are essentially three styles/levels of questions:
General (60% of questions) - the easiest style of question;
answers do not need to be word-perfect and can include information
outside of the verse from which the question came
According to (20%) - slightly more difficult; answers do not need
to be quoted, but will generally require a higher level of specificity
in answering; also may not give information outside the reference given
in the question (since the question is testing your knowledge of that
specific verse, not of the books in general)
Quote/Finish this Verse (20%) - most difficult level of question;
answers must be word-for-word from the text. You may add additional
verses of CORRECT information, however you must identify exactly where
the sought-after verse or verses BEGINS and ENDS. References, when
requested, must be exact.
